Sidi was founded in 1960 by Italian cyclist Dino Signori. In the beginning, he ran a craftman’s workshop, specialising in mountain sports footwear but moved into cycling and motorcycling in the late 1960s.
In the early days, Sidi manufactured motorcycle boots for such luminaries as Giacomo Agostini and motocross legend Joel Robert. This continued for much of the 70s with the invention of the Professional Motocross boot, later named Super Pro in 1980. Then, Sidi manufactured the Cecotto Racing boot with an upper made from boarded leather and a leather insole stitched on the sole and back zip fastener.
In 1986, the Royal Motocross boot introduced a new raised point protection system which determined the evolution of deflector system. A year later, Sidi became one of the first companies to put its faith in Lorica, a new synthetic material, very similar to leather but more consistent in quality for use in mass production.
Then, in 1995 Sidi produced the Start Model, their most advanced motorcycle road boot with many and varied technical innovations:
- Replaceable calf curb deflectors.
- Toe and heel of the boot with inner reinforcements to guard against damage.
- Internal part of the heel made from Kevlar to avoid friction burn and wear.
- Replaceable toe sliders.
At the end of the 90s, Sidi launched the revolutionary Vertebra system. Vertebra was a light, comfortable and highly technical boot. The newly-patented technology was the chief support structure of the boot. Each joint of the system moves independently, shielding the back of the leg and allowing enhanced movement. The next technical innovation was the Flex Force adjustable calf system. An internal plate is adjustable and fits snugly around the calf muscle, and is also entirely replaceable.
